In exchange for a free week's stay at his loft-style apartment near New York University, my friend Simon gave me two instructions. All I had to do was not "mess with his stuff" and walk and feed his dog until he returned home. Simon expressed the first instruction with two expletives, so I thought that it would be the more difficult one to follow.
